A liquid crystal display (LCD) consists of a thin layer of liquid crystal sandwiched between two glass sheets with transparent electrodes. When an electric field is applied, the molecular arrangement of the liquid crystal is disturbed, changing its optical properties and allowing it to either absorb or scatter light. There are two types of displays - field-effect displays absorb incident light when energized to produce black areas, while dynamic scattering displays cause energized molecules to scatter light
