What is The Gradient Projection Method for Nonlinear Programming. Part I. Linear Constraints about?
An extensive bibliography of publications on linear programming and associated techniques has recently been published by Riley and Gass [14]. A section of this book is devoted to nonlinear programming, and a number of papers abstracted there are concerned with methods for minimizing a convex (maximizing a concave) nonlinear objective function subject to linear constraints. A convex quadratic procedure which has been compu- tationally tested is described by Wolfe [19]. Additional references are given in the bibliographies in [1] and [19]. It appears that the relative merit of various methods for nonlinear programming will eventually have to be determined on the basis of actual computational experience. The wide range of applications for linear programming is by now well known. Riley and Gass list approximately 850 publications which are primarily applications of linear programming. These include industrial applications, transportation problems, contract awards, military applica- tions, agricultural applications, marketing analysis, production scheduling, inventory control and structural design. In many problems a far more realistic formulation is possible if a linearized approximati
