The normal menstrual cycle depends on changes in hormone levels controlled by the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. The hypothalamus secretes GnRH to stimulate the pituitary to release FSH and LH. FSH and LH act on the ovaries to regulate follicle development and ovulation. During the follicular phase, FSH causes follicle growth and estrogen production.
