Neck swellings can be classified as midline or lateral. Midline swellings include dermoid cysts, thyroglossal cysts, and median ectopic thyroid tissue. Common lateral neck swellings in the anterior triangle are lymphadenopathy and carotid body tumors. Cystic lateral neck swellings include branchial cysts and pyogenic abscesses. Posterior triangle solid swellings can be lymphadenopathy or a cervical rib. Differential diagnosis depends on anatomical location and characteristics of the swelling.
