What is Azo Dye Synthesis from Amine and Phenol about?

To make azo dyes, an aromatic amine is reacted with nitrous acid and hydrochloric acid to form an unstable diazonium cation. This cation is then reacted with a phenol, which acts as an electrophile. The reaction between the diazonium cation and phenol precipitates the azo dye out of solution. Different combinations of amines and phenols produce dyes of different colors, with the color seen being complementary to the wavelength of light absorbed by the dye.
