The poem describes a knight who falls asleep in the meadow and dreams of pale kings and warriors who say that La Belle Dame sans Merci has him in thrall. When he awakes, he is alone on the cold hillside. He remains there, loitering pale and alone, as the landscape has withered. He recalls meeting a beautiful faerie woman in the meadow who sang to him and proclaimed her love for him before taking him to her grotto, where she cried and he kissed her eyes shut.
