In the Negev desert southwest of the Dead Sea, over 500 rock inscriptions have been discovered near Har Karkom dating between 1200-1000 BCE. The inscriptions contain proto-Sinaitic and proto-Canaanite glyphs, and some explicitly mention the name of the Israelite god "Yahweh" in various abbreviated forms such as "Yah", "El Yah", and "Yahu". Drawings of the menorah, a symbol of Judaism, are also present. Scholars have translated many of the texts as dedications and prayers in ancient Hebrew. The archaic style
