Kirkcaldy had the honour of being the first town in Fife to build a tramway after obtaining Parliamentary Authority to build several lines in the town. The system opened on 28 February 1903 and connected Gallatown and Linktown (the west end of Link Street), by way of the Path and High Street. Another tramway system was to follow in 1906, financed and built by Randolph Wemyss to transport his workers between the villages and the coal pits in his ownership.
