This study compared peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) to forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) in monitoring 197 asthmatic patients over two visits to an outpatient clinic. There was a high correlation between PEFR and FEV1. However, 24 of 56 (43%) patients with a FEV1 change over 15% showed a PEFR change under 15%, while 14 of 42 (33%) with a FEV1 change under 15% had a PEFR change over 15%.
