Most popular treatments of the Nazis are dramatic and often lurid in tone. This solid and straightforward title, however, was designed primarily for the classroom. Professor McDonough provides a good overview of the Nazi era in Germany. In a sense, his work here is more functional than inspired; there are no surprises in its pages, and the author is certainly no historical revisionist. Hitler and the National Socialists are still the bad guys, better at acquiring political power than using it, and the German people and their institutions generally supported them—until the war began to turn against them. But McDonough is neither strident nor sensationalistic. Almost neutral in tone, he simply allows the Nazis and their supporters to condemn themselves by their own actions and lets the results speak for themselves.
