What is Care and Punishment: The Dilemmas of Prison Medicine (Contemporary Community Health Series) about?

This analysis of prison medical services focuses on the paradox of having the same institution meting out punishment while providing care for health problems. Also discussed are the effects of the prison environment on the ability of health care professionals to make appropriate medical decisions. The book examines the treatment of specific disorders found in U.S. prisons, including AIDS, venereal disease, alcohol and drug abuse, liver disease, neurologic and psychiatric disorders, with emphasis placed on the differences in their treatment inside and outside prisons. Ethical dilemmas considered include the separation of medical values from the legal and correctional functions of a correctional institution, the evaluation of the quality of medical care, and the forced examination of body cavities for evidence of contraband drugs. Two reform projects in Massachusetts are also discussed. One of the authors led the Prison Health Project from 1972-74, a project was led by well-intentioned but ineffective people and which failed.
