What is Characteristic Reactions of Nickel Ions about?

Nickel ions (Ni²⁺) commonly exist in a +2 oxidation state and can form various complex ions, including a green hydrated ion. They react with aqueous ammonia and sodium hydroxide to precipitate nickel(II) hydroxide, which can dissolve in excess ammonia to form a blue complex. Nickel(II) also reacts with dimethylglyoxime to produce a rose-red precipitate and forms black nickel sulfide in basic solutions containing sulfide ion.
