What is A Distributed Personalized News System Based on Mobile Agents about?

In this paper we give an overview of the mechanisms and concepts developed for an agent based personalized information system which was implemented as a Java prototype. The concepts implemented in our prototype provide a reasonable distribution of functionality between the users and the providers of information in a distributed news system. The main emphasis in this paper is in the discussion of a concept which allows the specification of sophisticated agent behavior without imposing the need to use agent programming/communication languages on the users side. This feature is essential in our prototype because the system is designed to allow inexperienced users transparent access to a wide range of information providers using mobile agents as their representatives during the information retrieval process.
