The Rastrakuta Empire rose to power in the mid-8th century in southern and central India after Dantidurga, a chieftain of the Rastrakuta family, overthrew the Chalukya dynasty. The Rastrakutas established their capital first at Gulbarga and later moved it to Manyakheta under their ruler Govinda III.
