What is Credence Decomposition of the Total Error in Survey Research Estimates about?
## Credence Decomposition of the Total Error in Survey Research Estimates In survey research, formal methods have long been employed to appraise errors of a specific kind: those arising from sampling fluctuations. Because sampling errors can be analyzed explicitly, researchers may sometimes treat sampling as the only source of errors in estimates. Yet we know that most of the time, "nonsampling" errors are much larger than pure sampling fluctuations. Very few practical procedures are presently available for analyzing the total error in estimates. What is needed is a methodology for taking systematic account of whatever information and judgment is available on possible sources of errors. Although the formal logic underlying such issues is now well established (Pratt et al., 1964; Raiffa and Schlaifer, 1961; Savage, 1954), very little of the theory has yet found its way into practice. The purpose of this paper is to outline a general strategy for incorporating an assessment of all sources of errors in the estimation of population parameters in the case of survey research. The procedure -credence decomposition of the total error -is largely "Bayesian" in its spirit. The first task wil
