The Avar Khanate was a Muslim state that controlled Central Dagestan from the early 13th century to the 19th century. It underwent a peaceful Islamization in the early 12th century and faced Mongol invasions in the 13th century. The khanate reached the height of its power under Umma-Khan in the late 18th century but submitted to Russian authority in 1801. This led the Avar population to rise up in an insurgency known as the Caucasian War until the khanate was abolished in 1864.
