The Scottish Audit of Surgical Mortality (SASM) reviewed 44,230 deaths over 10 years to identify areas of concern related to anesthesia. The audit found that anesthesia factors were identified in 8% of deaths, with 43% related to pre-operative assessment issues. Anesthesia also played a role in 18% more deaths where decision making was shared with surgeons, 41% of which involved access to critical care.
