## Abstract The microscopic theory of lattice dynamics is employed to calculate the phonon dispersion curves of lithium. Instead of pseudo wavefunctions, Bloch wavefunctions are used that are solutions of the Schrödinger equation with a realistic crystal potential. The requirement of translation invariance leads up to a sum rule for the density‐density correlation function (**q** + **Q**, **q** + **Q**') with **q**=0. For arbitrary vectors **q** any approximation could be avoided for by means of interpolating the density of the conduction electrons. The resulting phonon spectrum is in good agreement with experiment.
