This document describes two 5.5 GHz voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) circuit designs with different types of inductors in the LC tank. The first design uses a tunable active inductor to provide coarse frequency tuning, while fine tuning is controlled by a varactor. The second design uses a passive on-chip inductor in the LC tank. Simulation results show the VCO with passive inductor has better phase noise performance compared to the active inductor design. Both VCO designs were fabricated in a 0.18um CMO
