About this document

Origins of Chocolate as a Drink by Marinela Seremet is a document available to read on EtoBox.

The history of chocolate began in Mesoamerica, where the Aztecs cultivated and consumed cocoa seeds as a bitter drink and used them as currency. They believed the cocoa seeds were a gift from their god Quetzalcoatl and had medicinal and strength-giving properties. After arriving in Europe in the 16th century, sugar was added to chocolate to make it sweeter, and it gained popularity among the elite and common people. Eventually, chocolate became a staple food provided to U.S. soldiers during war times.
