Bis( n-cyclopentadienyl)hydridorhenium Cp,ReH undergoes stereospecific tram insertion reactions when treated with monosubstituted acetylenes HCSR (R = CO,Me, CN, CF,). The cis alkenyl complexes Cp,Re[$-( Z)-CH=CHR] thus formed isomerize thermally or under acid catalysis to produce the tram isomers Cp, Re[ vi-(E)-CH=CHR]. When Cp,ReH adds to HC&COMe only the trans isomer is observed. The regiospecific P-addition of Cp,ReH contrasts with the a-addition of Cp,MoH, and Cp,WH,. The insertion of acetylenes HCSR' into the metal-carbon bond of some alkenyl complexes Cp, Re[ vi-( E)-CH=CHR] affords butadienyl complexes Cp,Re[$-{(lE,3E)-CH=CHR'CH=CHR}] (R,R' = COMe, CO,Me).
