What is Baal Offerings and Sacrificial Gifts about?

In this paper, J. van Baal defines offerings as acts of presenting items to supernatural beings, while sacrifices involve the ritual killing of the offering. He critiques previous theories that emphasize the sacred nature of sacrifices, arguing instead that both offerings and sacrifices should be understood primarily as gifts, which carry obligations of reciprocity. The paper explores the complexities of gift exchange and its implications for understanding social relationships and the nature of sacrifice.
