The Porgera Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea has implemented a cement paste backfill system to pump tailings underground and reduce environmental impact. Approximately 8% of tailings are pumped as a paste using a Putzmeister pump up to 3km through a 150mm pipeline. The paste has a high solids content of 73.5% which allows it to be used for stable underground backfill. This system prevents tailings from being released into the environment while improving safety and ore extraction capabilities in the mine.
