About this Environmental Science article

The Temperature of a Moorland Fishpond by T. T. Macan; Rachel Maudsley is a Environmental Science article available to read on EtoBox.

A recording thermograph, made by the Cambridge Instrument Company, having been used in a small stony stream (MACAN 1958), was transferred to Hodsons Tarn in 1957 . It was hoped that temperature measurements might throw light on the presence or absence of certain species or their relative abundance . Events observed in the tarn itself, such as rate of development, may yield some of the desired information, but much will not be forthcoming until comparable observations have been made in other parts of the country . The first objective is, therefore, to put on record the measurements made so that they are available for comparative purposes . The temperature of a body of water is influenced by its size . That of a small piece may follow air temperature closely with only a small lag in amplitude and time (VAAS & SACHLAN 1955), whereas a large one may accumulate heat all summer and be warmest at a time when average air temperature has started to fall (GORHAM 1958) . Temperature and volume of the inflow also play a part . Meteorological stations recording air temperature are frequent in Britain and it is desirable to make as much use of their data as possible . Accordingly the second obje
