What is “Controlled Irony”....Are you Serious? about?
The aim of this paper is to analyze the notion of controlled irony such as presented by Kierkegaard in the last section of his dissertation. I will try to prove that such idea of controlled irony cannot be interpreted -as often it has been -as an apologia of an instrumental use of irony, unless we start rejecting Kierkegaard's own conception of irony in that very same work. By means of a criticism of a thesis of C. Stephen Evans I will show the contradiction in claiming that Kierkegaard used controlled irony. Finally, I will suggest an alternative reading of the idea of controlled irony in accordance with the notion of infinite absolute negativity presented in On the Concept of Irony.
