It tells the story of Orissa Kane, a young woman who is providing financial support to her brother Steve as he builds his own flying machine. When Steve breaks his leg, Orissa takes his place in the aircraft, displaying such skills in the aerial exhibition that she wins top prize (and gets a boyfriend). Baum lived in an era of increasing feminism; his mother-in-law Matilda Joslyn Gage was a leading feminist of her generation, and it is clear that Baum had definite sympathies with the plight of women.
