The Chapekar brothers assassinated British officials in response to the oppressive measures taken during a plague outbreak in Pune, India in 1897. Damodar and Balkrishna Chapekar shot and killed Rand, the head of the Special Plague Commission, and his military escort for their disrespect of religious sentiments and mistreatment of citizens. Both brothers were later hanged for their actions. Their brother Vasudeo and two others were also hanged for killing police informants.
