Gamma-SLAM is a new stereo visual SLAM algorithm that uses variance grid maps to represent unstructured outdoor environments. It uses a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter, where each particle maintains a map of height variance in each grid cell. The maps represent the posterior distribution over height variance in each cell as a gamma distribution. Observations from stereo vision are used to update the sufficient statistics of these gamma distributions in each particle
