This study evaluated eight different methods for enumerating coliform bacteria in water samples using Escherichia coli and Enterobacter aerogenes cultures containing precise numbers of bacteria (30 organisms each). The methods tested included membrane filtration, standard plate counting, defined substrate technology, most probable number technique, and Petrifilm plates.
