Surface-enhanced hyper-Raman scattering (SEHRS) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using mode-locked Ti: sapphire laser excitation is reported. SEHRS and SERS from crystal violet molecules on colloidal silver were measured using 1 ps laser pulses (82 MHz repetition rate, I .2 W average power) at 800 nm wavelength excitation. This 800 nm excitation allowed simultaneous observation of SEHRS and SERS and a direct comparison of surface-enhancement factors for Raman scattering and hyper-Raman scattering. The ratio between the surface-enhancement factors of SERS and SEHRS for crystal violet on colloidal silver could be explained by different electromagnetic-enhancement conditions for both effects. No evidence exists of different chemical contributions to SERS and SEHRS for this molecule.
