The Magellan expedition was the first voyage to circumnavigate the globe from 1519-1522. Led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the Spanish fleet of five ships with 270 men departed from Seville in 1519. After navigating the treacherous Straits of Magellan and crossing the Pacific, Magellan was killed in the Philippines in 1521. Under the new commander Juan Sebastian Elcano, the expedition continued westward, becoming the first to sail around the world when the single remaining ship Victoria returne
