What is FOREWORD about?
Serene silences and howling winds, turquoise hues and infuriated white caps, soft sand and rounded pebbles, warmth and cold, recreation and meditation, pain and happiness have guided our steps toward the beach, this unique place where the ever-changing natural elements and human emotions singularly connect. The beach is the most dynamic and valued feature on the surface of the earth. It is constantly changing shape, absorbing the impacts of storms, and providing a home to an amazing number of living organisms and marine animals. The beach, sadly, has also become a place of extreme fragility. Unbridled coastal developments of all kinds-buildings, roads, railways, airports-are threatening and destroying the beaches that attracted us to the shore in the first place. The widespread damage on western Europe's storm-battered shores, the devastation inflicted by Hurricane Sandy along the northeastern U.S. seaboard, the deaths brought by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines-all of these recent tragedies have again exemplified the total inadequacy of infrastructure, and the vulnerability of cities built on the edge of coastlines.
