What is Artificial Selection in Dog Breeding about?

Gamekeepers in the 1800s bred mastiffs and bulldogs to create a new breed, the bullmastiff, to address a problem with poachers stealing game. Mastiffs were large and strong but too slow, while bulldogs were quick but small. By selectively breeding the two breeds, they created a new breed that was large, quick, strong and aggressive - perfect for chasing down poachers. This is an example of selective breeding, where humans choose what traits to breed for to create new breeds suited to specific purposes.
