Polyesters are formed from di-carboxylic acids and di-ols, while polyamides are formed from di-carboxylic acids and di-amines. Amino acids contain both a carboxylic acid group and an amine group, and can exhibit optical isomerism due to chiral carbons. Amino acids can act as both acids and bases and form zwitterions that are electrically neutral yet conduct electricity when dissolved in water. Multiple amino acids can join together via peptide bonds to form polypeptides or proteins.
