This study sequenced and analyzed draft genomes of Yersinia pestis obtained from two individuals who died during the Plague of Justinian between 541-543 AD. Radiocarbon dating placed the individuals in the timeframe of the first plague pandemic. Phylogenetic analysis found the Justinian plague lineage is distinct from those of later pandemics, suggesting independent emergences of Y. pestis from rodent reservoirs into humans.
