Pythagoras was an ancient Greek philosopher born around 580 BC in Samos, Greece. He founded the religious movement called Pythagoreanism based on the belief that mathematics and numbers underlie all aspects of reality. Pythagoras is best known for the Pythagorean theorem which bears his name. He established a secretive school in Croton, Italy where his followers lived communally and studied philosophy, ethics, and mathematics.
