Optical radars use lasers instead of microwaves for radar applications. This allows for higher accuracy and smaller package sizes, with some optical radars weighing less than 20 kg and able to recognize objects like cars. Common laser wavelengths used are 1.06 μm for YAG lasers and 10.6 μm for CO2 lasers. Optical radars are also known as LIDAR (light detection and ranging), LADAR (laser detection and ranging), and OADAR (optical aids to detection and ranging).
