June 2006. The period was chosen to ensure that new staff in the ED were familiar with the policy of no routine anti-emetic prescription with opiates. Patients were identified as receiving opiates from the controlled drugs record. Intravenous (IV) morphine and intranasal (IN) diamorphine were the opiates reviewed. Results: 7,645 ED patients were seen in this time, with the total number of patients receiving opiates being 316 (280 received IV morphine, and 30 IN diamorphine, 6 required both). Only one patient vomited having received IN diamorphine. 8y 2 percent of patients receiving IV morphine required no antiemetics, 16% of patients one anti-emetic, and 2% of patients 2 anti-emetics. Fifty six percent of all patients receiving anti-emetics had evidence of nausea/vomiting before opiate administration, 12% of all patients had received opiates prior to ED arrival and 6% of all patients received opiates by ED staff, unaware of our current practice of no anti-emetic prescribing with opiates.
