This study assessed early kidney damage in a population near a large zinc smelter in Avonmouth, UK that emitted cadmium and other heavy metals over 70 years. The researchers measured cadmium levels in urine samples from 180 local residents and found median levels close to those associated with early kidney and bone effects.
