What is Sema NAION about?

This study examines the association between semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, and the risk of new-onset nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in US veterans with type 2 diabetes. Among 102,361 veterans, semaglutide initiators had a 2.33-fold higher risk of NAION compared to those starting sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors, with incidence rates of 0.29% and 0.13%, respectively. While the absolute risk is low, clinicians should inform patients about this potential complication.
