This study investigates the microstructure of additively manufactured Inconel 939 and the impact of omitting solution treatment before ageing. The findings reveal that while the as-built microstructure lacks gamma prime (γ′) precipitation, the absence of solution treatment leads to the formation of the deleterious Eta (η) phase, resulting in embrittlement during tensile loading. Consequently, the authors conclude that solution treatment is essential for achieving the desired microstructure in this alloy.
