What is Adolescence as a Vulnerable Period for Psychosis Development about?
Puberty and adolescence refer to two complementary concepts: gonadal maturation (puberty) and an emergence of adult-like social and cognitive behaviors (adolescence). In this chapter, I will address both concepts in relation to brain maturation during the second decade of life, interweaving puberty, and adolescence in the process. I will begin by reviewing some of the key aspects of social behavior during adolescence as related to both sexual maturation and stress. A brief overview of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (stress) and hypothalamus–pituitary–gonadal (sexual maturation) axes will follow. I will then discuss how the two axes shape both white and gray matter during adolescence. I will also review some of our recent work relating cumulative exposure to testosterone during puberty to brain structure and function in early adulthood. I will conclude by discussing future directions that could enhance our understanding of factors that may modulate the risk of developing psychosis in youth.
