What is Lectures on Gurdjieff: 14 Public Lectures, 1949-1973 about?

The fourteen lectures which compose the text of this volume were given in four series over a 24 year period and all were previously distributed in various formats under different titles. The first series of four lectures was presented in October 1949. Less than a week later George Gurdjieff departed this life. The talks were published for the first time 24 years alter under the title “Is There ‘Life’ on Earth?” with only minor changes, chiefly referring to Gurdjieff in the past tense. Many references are made to the Gurdjieff’s only available written presentation, Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson, at that time in the final stages of publication. The second series followed four years later and covered additional subjects reflecting the author’s later researches. At the time, these lectures were distributed in mimeograph format, and only fully published 15 years after the author’s death, under the title “Making a Soul”. The third series of lectures followed nine years later in 1963, coincided with the publication of Gurdjieff’s second written work, Meetings with Remarkable Men, and refer to various journeys Bennett had made to parts of the world related to Gurdjieff’s own travels.
