A urinary tract infection occurs when the bladder or kidneys become infected, usually by E. coli bacteria. Symptoms of a bladder infection include painful urination and frequent urination, while a kidney infection also causes fever and flank pain. Urinary tract infections are a major health issue for children, affecting 3% each year and accounting for over 1 million pediatric doctor visits annually in the US. Girls have a higher risk of UTIs than boys throughout childhood.
