What is MICROBIOLOGICALLY INFLUENCED CORROSION: BASICS & CASE STUDIES about?

Significant corrosion losses in various industries world wide are attributed to microorganisms. Microbes generally thrive in the conducive environment of cooling water systems which aid in adhesion and growth. The colonized microbes and their metabolic products can deteriorate the various material of the cooling circuit. Microbial consortia associated with the corrosion phenomenon, usually constitute a locally focused attached microflora on metal surfaces. The disparate colonisation of microorganisms on the metal surface can generate corrosion potentials almost as large as that generated between incompatible metals. As the corrosion process advances, attached microflora propagates and infests the entire cooling system. Commonly, five categories of corrosion causing bacteria are widely recognized viz., iron oxidising, sulfate reducing, sulphur oxidising, nitrate reducing and the exopolymer (slime) producing bacteria. Sulfate reducing bacteria are the single most common causative organism of corrosion, constituting 50% of all instances of biocorrosion failures. This review dwells upon the characteristics of the bacteria involved in promoting corrosion. Some case studies of iron, stai
