What is Respiratory Rate as Hypoxia Indicator about?
This study evaluated respiratory rate as an indicator of hypoxia in 200 infants under 2 months of age presenting with acute illness symptoms. The respiratory rate and oxygen saturation of each infant was recorded upon admission. Infants were categorized as having hypoxia if their oxygen saturation was below 90%. The study found that a respiratory rate over 60 breaths per minute predicted hypoxia with 80% sensitivity and 68% specificity. This suggests that an elevated respiratory rate can be a good predictor
