What is Mediterranean Sea MARPOL Special Area about?
The International Maritime Organization has designated the Mediterranean Sea as a Special Area under MARPOL Annex V, effective May 1, 2009. This means stricter regulations for ship-generated garbage, including dry cargo residues and hold washing water, will apply within the Mediterranean Sea. Member states and industry organizations are encouraged to comply with the Special Area requirements on a voluntary basis immediately.
