Porfirio Diaz was a Mexican general and dictator who ruled Mexico from 1876 to 1911. During his 35 year rule, referred to as the Porfiriato, he brought great progress and modernization through allowing foreign investment. However, his rule also became increasingly authoritarian and repressive, leading to a popular revolution that removed him from power in 1911.
