What is Metaphor and culture: A relationship at a crossroads? about?
The cognitive theory of metaphor (hereafter, CMT) has always rested on the basic premise that metaphor and culture are intimately related. This is illustrated by two of the dearest assumptions used in the paradigm to explain how human cognition works: on the one hand, the notion of embodiment, i.e. the bodily, physical and cultural grounding of human cognition (Johnson 1987); on the other, the belief that human thinking basically relies upon encyclopedic knowledge and cultural models, i.e. idealized cognitive models among which metaphor appears to be particularly conspicuous (Lakoff 1987). However, the idea is far from new. Indeed, metaphor and related figurative phenomena have long ago been adopted as useful concepts for exploring the construction of cultural identities and cross-cultural differences in various disciplines within the Humanities, such as anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, etc. However, there are differences regarding the way metaphor is approached by these and mainstream CMT.
