Traceroute finds the path taken by an IP packet from a local switch to a specified destination. It discovers packet paths and where routing breaks down. The command traces the route by sending packets to a destination with increasing time-to-live (TTL) values and reports the IP addresses or hostnames of devices that respond. It has optional parameters like the source interface, minimum and maximum hop counts, number of probes, timeout, and destination port number.
